Ways To Watch
"Quiet and strategic" is how Yan defines his fighting style and his way of talking. He is calm, measures his words, and thinks about his answers. However, this does not hide his natural ability as a leader, nor his aggressiveness during fights, none of which have ever gone to a judges' decision. "I have a lot of patience," he explains. When he gets tired of studying his opponents, he decides it's time to finish them. Seemingly contradictory concepts, but judging by his impeccable record, they work.
From his early beginnings in the grass in Visconde de Maua, Yan has gone far. More precisely, to Japan, where he tried to accomplish a big dream. In addition to reaching his goal of fighting in the Land of the Rising Sun, he did it against a legend of the sport - Kazushi Sakuraba - at the historical Saitama Arena. Yan won by submission in the second round. Fighting is Yan's life and teaching guarantees him a living. Asked if he has been to college, Yan's answer is clear, "Yes, jiu-jitsu college. It was what I chose, and I dedicated myself to it and now I can live by it just as much as a doctor or a lawyer living off their occupations." Of his 10 fights, eight were in Europe, having fought in Austria, Sweden, Switzerland and Spain.
Dividing his time between Barcelona and Rio, Yan, who has a 12-year-old son, looks to his family and team to help focus on upcoming fights. In his spare time, Yan is happy to have a beer with friends, go to the beach, go back to his hometown and travel. He also loves tattoos, apparent on first glance, as he is full of them. A number of these were spur of the moment, so he now has a hard time explaining what they mean. Yan loves to fight, but if he had to choose another profession, it would have to be something exciting, "something with adrenaline, kind of like the BOPE police."
In terms of career goals, Yan is matter-of-fact. He does not think much about where he will be in a few years, he just knows he is halfway there. "I reached most of my goals just by getting here. Now, I want to get to the UFC," he concludes.
